In Loving Memory of Maya

In Loving Memory of Maya

April 4, 1928 to May 28, 2014

Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri. Her parents divorced when she was only three and she was sent with her brother Bailey to live with their grandmother in the small town of Stamps, Arkansas. In Stamps, the young girl experienced the racial discrimination that was the legally enforced way of life in the American South, but she also absorbed the deep religious faith and old-fashioned courtesy of traditional African American life. She credits her grandmother and her extended family with instilling in her the values that informed her later life and career. She enjoyed a close relationship with her brother. Unable to pronounce her name because of a stutter, Bailey called her “My” for “My sister.” A few years later, when he read a book about the Maya Indians, he began to call her “Maya,” and the name stuck.

At age seven, while visiting her mother in Chicago, she was sexually molested by her mother’s boyfriend. Too ashamed to tell any of the adults in her life, she confided in her brother. When she later heard the news that an uncle had killed her attacker, she felt that her words had killed the man. She fell silent and did not speak for five years.
Maya began to speak again at 13, when she and her brother rejoined their mother in San Francisco. Maya attended Mission High School and won a scholarship to study dance and drama at San Francisco’s Labor School, where she was exposed to the progressive ideals that animated her later political activism. She dropped out of school in her teens to become San Francisco’s first African American female cable car conductor. She later returned to high school, but became pregnant in her senior year and graduated a few weeks before giving birth to her son, Guy. She left home at 16 and took on the difficult life of a single mother, supporting herself and her son by working as a waitress and cook, but she had not given up on her talents for music, dance, performance and poetry.

With the guidance of her friend, the novelist James Baldwin, she began work on the book that would become I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Published in 1970, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was published to international acclaim and enormous popular success. The list of her published verse, non-fiction, and fiction now includes more than 30 bestselling titles.

Jesus’ Approach to Discipleship

Jesus’ Approach to Discipleship

Jesus’ method of discipleship was hands-on. It takes confidence and trust to do discipleship as Jesus did it.

Observations of Jesus’ Approach

He recruited regular untrained men.
A number of His first disciples were fisherman and one was a tax collector. Jesus even went as far as to say, “you cannot put new wine in old wineskins.”
On-site training
When Jesus called the disciples, they didn’t have a class. Everyday life and circumstances were their classrooms, unlike the Pharisees who had their study sessions, etc. Jesus said, “foxes have holes, but the son of man has nowhere to lay his head.”
Empowerment
Jesus immediately transferred authority and power to the disciples. The 72 disciples came back in awe of the power they had over demons etc.
Fellowship
The disciples were always together as a group. With Jesus instructing them

The aspect of Jesus’ ministry that interests me is the release of power and authority. The disciples were never trained in deliverance. They never took a class. Jesus gave them instructions and told them to go and they went.
Jesus was given the Holy Spirit without measure. He was God incarnate. Yet, He did have the need to control every disciple or hoard His spiritual power. Jesus released it right away.

In my opinion, as men, we need room to grow and learn. God gives us authority and set of free to become who we want to be. The first disciples did not become apostles in a safety net. We are not living in the same time frame, however, the principles remain the same. Relinquish authority to others. It takes trust. That’s what God did with Adam and Eve. He didn’t run to Adam and Eve and say straight away, “don’t listen to the serpent.”

We are all made in the image of God and we all need a sphere of influence to operate. Because of the fall of man, man has wanted to control everything including other men, but that was not God’s intent. Each person is made with unique traits and gifts specific for their purpose and place in the world. God’s intent is harmony.

Yes, there is authority. God’s authority is without oppression and misuse. Jesus said, ‘as the Father has given you a Kingdom, so I give you a Kingdom.’ In God’s Kingdom, he nurtures everything to grow and bear fruit. So shall it be in my life in Jesus’ name. Amen.

God’s Intent One

God’s Intent One

Have you ever asked the a person if they Christian, and they the response was “No, I’m Baptist”

Jesus’ prayer was “That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” – John 17: 23

However in Christendom we are divided in sects Pentecostal, Baptist, Seventh Day Baptist, Methodist, Calvinist, Non Denominational, etc. Paul clearly states in Ephesian 4:4-6

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” ONE

I must add I’m not knocking the various Christian Groups, I’m saying let us know and understand we are one in Christ Jesus.

Jesus and the Spirit of Prophecy

Jesus and the Spirit of Prophecy

Before I begin, I must repent before the Lord for not believing in His purpose for my life when I am in troubled times. God proves to be the Promise Maker and Keeper. God did this for Jesus our forerunner and High Priest. Jesus said to us, “as the Father has sent me, so I send you.” John 20:21

Jesus’ life was based on prophesy,

“Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,” Psalm 40:7

Almost every aspect of Jesus’ life found in the Old Testament form the details of His birth to His burial. While reading scripture in memory of Him during Passover, Holy Spirit opened my eyes to see how the least of man’s dealing, the trial of Jesus, synchronized with scripture as the divine plan unfolded. From how many times Peter would deny Jesus, to lots being cast for His clothes (Psalm 22:8).

As an onlooker unaware of scripture, events would seem normal, but God’s Sovereignty reveals itself in all things.

Where was Satan in all this?
Accomplishing evil while God works it out for His good. Satan would have to work contrary to His nature to defeat God. Killing Jesus provided Salvation for the whole world. Keeping Him alive would disannul the promise in Genesis 3:15 of “crushing the serpents head.” Jesus descended to hell to take “the keys of hell and death” from Satan. Rev.1: 18 Hallelujah!!!

God our Father has a purpose in all things and a purpose for all His creations. Scripture encourages us to “…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,” Philippians 2:12.
There comes a moment of advancement in a child of God’s life when we need to know which decision to make. Not only that God the Holy Spirit has promised many of his children gifts and callings. The word tells us, “for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” Romans 11: 29. This means God doesn’t change His mind when it comes to giving gifts to his children.

We have the opportunity to read about the call to greatness of Joseph, Joshua, and even David. And I’m using Jesus as the ultimate example. There are so many struggles and trials in life that the question pops up, “Will God’s prophesies over our lives as His children come through?” Yes. God is the Promise Maker and Keeper.

I repented because being an unbeliever almost killed me, but God’s promise kept me alive. I will see the promise. The obstacles we see are our inadequacies. Gideon and Moses saw their inadequacies, however, they moved forward in faith, because God is the Boss. Wow, I fear, because I’ve listened to messages about trusting a big God.

I’m not quite done. “God works in us to do His good pleasure” Philippians 2:13 There is a work God is doing in all His children. Why will God stop working in you and me? Faith comes from the word. Paul says all things work together for good. If Paul had known we would be reading his letters as scripture who knew what he would do differently. He would probably say “lock me up some more don’t let me out of prison I have another lesson to write for centuries to come.”

Paul wrote us words he lived. As he looks from heaven, he’ll be wowed and think, ‘that’s why I was locked up so much, so the gentiles across the world will read my letters and I thought I was only writing to Corinth.”

Therefore the prophecies over our lives are AMEN. There are many teachings on dreams dying and unfulfilled words. That is not for you as God’s child. Because I’m here to encourage you to place your eyes on God. You will complete the prophecy with your eyes on Him alone.

Jesus’ last words were to His Father, who He could see no more as He died for our sins. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.” His eyes were on him till He saw Him no more.

Pilate’s Conversation with Jesus

Pilate’s Conversation with Jesus

Pilate asked Jesus, ” are you King of the Jews?” Jesus responded “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”

These words from Jesus spoke volumes because Pilate and many others knew the follow Jesus had. Even the chief priest feared the people if they took Jesus a certain time. Luke 22:2. Why didn’t the people cry out for Jesus to be free this time? Jesus responded to Pilate yes and also He, Jesus testified of truth.

Pilate asked Jesus “What is truth?” Immediately Pilate said he find no fault in Him. Pilate was a man of authority who heard the Truth speak to him. Pilate tried his best to get Jesus off the hook of death “You have a custom to release another…”John 18:39. Pilate was hoping they would take Jesus, instead the people request Barabbas.

Pilate played along again Pilate expressed he found no fault in Jesus. Then the Priest said it clearly Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, which made Him worthy of death.

Pilate didn’t think Jesus was beside Himself. Pilate became more convicted more afraid although in the seat of such power, he was faced to face with Power. Pilate really wanted to let Jesus go. He didn’t ask Him if He was a King this time, but “where are you from.” As if to say which place are you King of.

Pilate thought he had power. Jesus said “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.” John 19:11.

Pilate knew He came across an authority greater than Himself. This King Jesus before him was not seeking sympathy, Jesus wasn’t seeking to be let go. Jesus didn’t want to cut a deal. “Like a sheep before his shearers he opened not his mouth…” Is 53:7 least they might let him go.

Pilate knew He was before the King of Kings. He knew it in his spirit. He tired to let Jesus go.

” The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” John 19:21-22

Pilate wrote the truth. The questions stands how do we respond to Jesus today? Should we crucify him or accept and serve Him as King. Let us sanctify they Lord Jesus in our hearts

15 but [a]sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a [b]defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and [c]reverence; 16 [d]and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. 17 For it is better, if [e]God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. – 1 Peter 3:15-17

A Lifestyle of Faith

Prayers that Bring Healing

By John Eckhardt

“For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.”- Mark 11:23

“Grow up in faith. Open your mouth and speak to talk to sickness.” Prayers that Bring Healing Pg.7.

It’s a wonderful journey. I asked myself is this a magic trick as God’s children we just go around speaking to everything and every situation at random. Holy Spirit is revealing to me a lifestyle of faith. A life still of faith is growing our relationship with God to the point where we think and speak as He would in a circumstance. Jesus spoke and moved as the Holy Spirit lead Him. The truth is growth only takes place with practice and skill Jesus said “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.” John 7:16-18.

God is life.

Introduction to Our God

And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. John 17:3 Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits. Daniel 11:32

Many of us go to a religious institution, whether it is a church, a temple or the mountains. The two scriptures above relates not to an exercise, or learning about GOD, but a KNOWING. I’ve been saved for about 17 years, with the aspiration of being a pastor. The other day Holy Spirit, spoke to my heart and communicated this to me. You have everything in Christ in God settle down, there is no goal to reach. Be still and know I am God. He was saying get to know me. As I’m writing this its early morning I don’t have a message to prepare, however I’m getting to know God at His pace. It is in the process of knowing and growing in intimacy exploits and activity will come.

Holy Spirit opened my eyes. In the Old Testament Old covenant, we see men called by God and anointed by God. It was am immediate call they heard God’s voice today; they were preaching to the people tomorrow. The New Testament the New Covenant is based on better promises in Christ Jesus. It’s a more intimate personal covenant, were Jesus spent three years with the disciples, told them to wait on the power of the Holy Spirit. It was about another three years before Gentiles were brought to the fold. It was all a timely process of relationship. The new covenant is based on Forgiveness of sins to know Jesus and the Father to become like Jesus. That’s life process.

This leads me to GOD. Who is the GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and of course Jesus and all of Us? The deeper begins.

Repentance

What is your presence Lord?

(Acts 3:19 NKJV) “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.”

Repentance proceeds the presence of the Lord presence of the Lord. I say this because of the evidence of John the Baptist. Jesus Christ is Emmanuel “God with us” [ Isaiah 7:14, Mat. 1:23]. Jesus didn’t simply come one the seen. He was announced. He was prepared for. John the baptist came crying in the wilderness “prepare ye the way of the Lord, make the crocked path straight.” Mat. 3:3.
John the Baptist started his ministry in AD28. Since Jesus started His ministry around age 30; If almost accurate to say John ministered for 2 years before Jesus started his ministry. Jews practiced a form of baptism called Tevilah. (This again seems to be what the man at pool was waiting to be immersed.)
* The Jewish rite of water purifification in a Mikvah (pool) was known as TevilahTevilah was by full body immersion with “living” water from a Spring. The Mikvah had the proportions 3 cubits long & 1 cubits deep and 1 cubit wide. This was done for purifications before certain events such as spiritual cleansing, coming into the presence of God, marriage, and also after certain events such as childbirth and disease. Tevilah was also one of three requirements for conversion of the Gentiles to Judaism. The washing of hands & feet commonly practiced was a miniature Tevilah.
There is a definite preparation for the presence or coming of God. You know I’m thinking about it. Many times we tell people to come as you are, here look at the preparation for the Jesus to come to then Baptize with fire. Are we taking away from the truth of repentance. Which doesn’t mean only to stop or turn around but to consider. Many people say I can’t come until I straighten out my life. We tell them no come as you are and here we find John the baptist preparing the way. We know we are sinners, we know we need to repent. There is no quick fix, but steadfast grace to cleanse and make whole – the steady work of the Holy Spirit. There is a steadfast preparation an inching ahead to Christ being formed in us.
Penitent sinner: This is a word we don’t here often (feeling or showing sorrow and regret for having done wrong; repentant)*

The Things Above

“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.  Col 3:1”

Jesus has captivated my heart with His word. Jesus says if your eye be single your whole body will be full of light and if your eye be evil behold how great it the darkness. At times  they were physical things that I gaze at in my heart. But Holy Spirit is saying look continually to Jesus, you can see Him, I could ask what does He look like. In Hebrews we are asked to “look onto Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith.” -Heb. 12:2

We look with the eyes of the Spirit after all the word says “we are seated with Christ in Heavenly places.”-Eph. 2:6 This is fact not fiction we are indeed seated with Him. Jesus went on to say we are “not of this world” in John 17:14. We are pilgrims on this earth.

Jesus gave four examples of people in the parable of the sewer. I was the one where the cares of this life choked the word, but “God is faithful… to whom he has called out of Darkness. 1Pe 2:9”  The problem lies when I think I want something besides the word to be my comfort and my joy.

“Set your affection” . Their came a time when my affections were crossed I longed for people of this earth, but I find Christ never gave up on me.

Jesus is our Savior and our Lord, the truth is we always need saving. If we know we always need a Savior  we’ll find He’s always willing to forgive and give us a new start. However if we think we can stand without him or on our own we will believe we can never get up again.

That is what happen to me I thought because of my failures I was disqualified, but the truth stands He loves me and I need a Savior every day.

The Pharisees thought they had it made because they were very religious on the out side. That was me. And when my heart was broken I assumed God gave upon because I could keep His word. Never the less the faithfulness of God prevailed and restored me.

“The things above”. These are love, joy peace and hope. These are practical things in hard times. Having a heart on this things above does not mean being a theologian or being super spiritual, it means trusting what Jesus accomplished on the cross for me, for us for the world.

Of course the enemy will attach, but remember keep my eyes and our eyes on Jesus.

What is humility to me?
I will always fall short, always need improvement, always need the help from Jesus and others and my security is never in the things or do accomplish, but my security is in Jesus Christ(His Love for me).
